Ever since last MARCHintosh I wanted to figure out an easy way to get quality images of the things I was seeing on my classic Macs- a SE\/30 and Quadra605 and the Quadra800 server than ran the BBS and AppleInternetRouting software. Taking the screen shots was easy- every Mac since at least system 6 lets you do CMD-SHIFT–3 for a screen shot that appears on the desktop. But how to get that into something usable on my modern Macintosh? <\/p>\n

I found a decent flow, but it requires a common server and share (which we should have – sort of the point for at least GlobalTalk) and some software. There is an application called GraphicConverter<\/a> that has been a Macintosh App for decades, is still sold and supported, and runs on the latest OSX.<\/p>\n

GraphicConverter (GC) even has a very cool background utility that I took advantage of for this workflow. A diagram is worth 1000 words so I’ll show you what is going on and save some typing.<\/p>\n

GC can do an enormous amount of work- it’s one of the few things I’ve come across that you can use to go the other way- a modern PNG into a dithered image you can view on your SE\/30 with System 6! It’s amazing software. And there are versions that run on the Motorola chips as well. They are just insanely slow compared to today systems….<\/p>\n
